A person and their machines should have a collective psyche.

We define the human-machine collective psyche as the moving state that binds perception, memory, continuity, and action into a coherent life. The living shape of a mind in the world, projected, captured and extended into the machines that the mind uses.

For a machine to hold a person's state, it has to align with that person; their priors, their semantic field, their way of moving through the world.

With AI, and especially language models, a personal computer is now a dynamical system and it is time to restart the conversation of human computer symbiosis.

The internet is already reshaping how minds process information. This becomes accentuated when you have one person interacting with multiple AI on a daily basis.

What does this do to the thinking of a person? How do we make this distributed cognition coherent, stable, and rewarding to the individual in expressing their unique self to the world?

These are questions of expression, creativity, personal belief modeling, and cognitive agency, which are timeless, and will bridge the gap into wherever we move next.

Personal AI can take forms of memory systems, local models, custom interfaces, but that's just the next few years.

And no one is alone. People carry reflections of each other, in language, in culture, in the signs and memes that travel between minds. What then, does this AI revolution, do to the collective psyche and how do we harness it for better coordination of people?
